CB was at many stadiums AND this weekend and attended games of all ages. The conclusion of all our website partners is more or less the same: Cyprus has a lot of basketball talent. This proposal is unquestionable.
But what about the future of these children? How are we going to keep them in the sport of basketball? How can we motivate them to continue doing what they love?
These are questions that cannot be answered in a few lines, as entire studies are needed. But if you take a walk around the stadiums and talk to coaches/players/parents you hear the following three things:
1. In Cyprus, for better or worse, there are many… affinities/relationships/friendships that push some players while others are left on the sidelines. In this way, athletes are discouraged and stop playing seriously at a young age.
2. In Cyprus there is insufficient funding for the teams, so there is no motivation to get seriously involved in basketball.
3. And finally, xenomania is evident in Cyprus. The belief that everything that comes from abroad is always “easier”. So teams prefer to bring in a “ready-made” player from abroad rather than waste time developing a Cypriot.
All arguments have their basis and certainly a great deal of truth. There are arguments from those with opposing views. I’m opening up a huge debate, but what is certain is that action is needed to provide a future for our children.
