Al Ahly BC represents the basketball department of one of the biggest sporting organizations in the Arab world and one of the most influential clubs across all sports globally. With a fan base exceeding 70 million supporters, massive sports facilities across Egypt, a strong organizational structure and a championship mentality in every department, Al Ahly operates in an environment where excellence is the standard and success is always the expectation.
In such a demanding organization, continuing a partnership with a coach is never automatic. It is earned through results, leadership, trust and the ability to manage pressure at the highest level.
During his first season in Egypt, Gavriel guided Al Ahly BC to the Egyptian League Championship, the Egyptian Super Cup and the Mortabta Cup, while also leading the team to the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Final Four, one of the most important FIBA club competitions in the world.
However, the story of Linos Gavriel was not created in one season. It is the result of more than two decades of work across Europe, Asia and Africa, adapting to different basketball cultures, different markets and organizations with championship expectations.
Throughout his career, Gavriel has won league championships, domestic cups and Super Cups across three different continents, demonstrating his ability to create winning teams regardless of country, culture or circumstances.
In Greece, Gavriel proved that his impact was not limited to international competitions but also extended to one of Europe’s most competitive domestic leagues. With historic Panionios BC, he produced an impressive winning streak, achieving a run of consecutive victories that had not been recorded by the club for more than a decade. The previous time Panionios reached such a level was during its EuroLeague era, when the club competed with significantly greater financial resources and a much larger budget. Achieving this success with limited resources highlighted Gavriel’s coaching ability, team management and capacity to maximize performance.
He later continued his work in the Greek Basket League as Head Coach of Larissa BC, proving his ability to compete and build competitive teams at the highest domestic level.
With AEK Larnaca, Gavriel created one of the most memorable European campaigns by a Cypriot club, highlighted by the historic victory over Pallacanestro Varese, one of the most respected names in European basketball history, a club with five European Champions Cups and a remarkable continental legacy.
As Head Coach of the Cyprus Men’s National Team, Gavriel was also part of a historic milestone for Cypriot basketball. In 2017, Cyprus achieved its first-ever victory over Portugal, creating a landmark moment for the national team and an important step in the development of Cypriot basketball on the international stage.
One of the defining chapters of Gavriel’s international career came in Bahrain with Manama Club. Coming from one of the smallest Arab countries in both territory and population, Manama’s rise to continental success represented a remarkable achievement. Gavriel led the club to the 2023 FIBA WASL Championship, overcoming teams from larger basketball markets and stronger financial backgrounds in what became one of the most significant achievements of his career.
His international FIBA résumé also includes two consecutive FIBA Intercontinental Cup appearances (2022 and 2023) with two different teams, demonstrating his ability to lead different continental champions onto the global stage.
From Étoile Sportive du Sahel in Tunisia, where he won both the league and cup in his first season, to Manama Club in Bahrain and now Al Ahly BC in Egypt, Gavriel has repeatedly shown his ability to adapt, lead and create winning cultures in completely different basketball environments.
