CB OPINION: “Shock as NBA cancels rest of season”

This just in from our follower and friend Mr. Borna Ali Khani all the way from Spain Mallorca giving us an interesting advice and approach towards this pandemic crisis that the whole world is facing. You should note that Mr. Borna was borne and raised in Nicosia Cyprus from Iranian parents and is deeply concerned of our well being.
Although at first shocking we must be grateful that the NBA has taken the pioneering step and is showing the way to other sports leagues; that nothing is more important than minimising the risk that COVID-19 represents to us as a race.
We are all in this together. The greatest collective challenge our generation has ever faced. Unprecedented in size, or scale. As fans of basketball we know that once your defence falls apart, the game is lost. Our only possible strategy of defence right now, is to slow down the spread of this virus in order to win time and not exhaust our medical care capacities.
Our situation in Cyprus is at this point entirely manageable. If we do our collective part we can beat this back and take control of the situation as other countries have. Our biggest responsibility is to implement strict Social Distancing.
Social distancing measures are taken to restrict when and where people can gather to stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases. Social distancing measures include limiting large groups of people coming together, closing buildings and canceling events and limiting interpersonal contacts.
Right now, globally, the infection rate of this disease is such that when left unchecked, numbers double every 4 days. This is up from 6 days just last week.
On average each person infect 2.5 others. Our challenge as a race is to reduce this number to below 1.

If on average, each person who is infected by this virus infects less than one person this will break the chain of infection and beat this virus back.
This is how China managed to buy the rest of the world time to prepare and is also what we need to do in Cyprus.
Even before such measures are imposed, we need to follow the example of the NBA and reduce our interpersonal interactions to the absolute essential minimum. Whatever the personal cost to us and our comfort.
Sincerely Borna
